Suilven, means Pillar Mountain in Old Norse. It was mostly given this name, as from the sea, the Vikings saw the mountain as being a pillar. In 2005, the two estates that Suilven sits on were bought by the local community with help from the John Muir Trust who endeavour to protect the land for future generations.
